Chapter 26 member Susan Bell capped off an impressive string of regional contest wins with the biggest of them all: U.S. National Sportsman Aerobatic Champion.

Flying her Extra 300 across the country to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to the championships, she arrived as a series of storms arrived. The practice days were canceled due to low ceilings and the contest flights delayed by rain. The Sportsman group managed to get in two flights, the Known and Free, and she had to fly both her flights the same day.  Placing second of 19 pilots in the Known with a score of 82.8% and first in the Free with a personal year-best of 86.6%, she took the Overall Sportsman win with 84.7%.

Susan is the first time recipient of the new Giles Henderson Trophy, conceived by President Emeritus, Mike Heuer of Tennessee and funded by donations from friends and IAC members in memory of Giles Henderson, IAC Hall of Fame member. The trophy is given each year to the U.S. Sportsman Aerobatic Champion.
